Dear Classmates, Teammates and Friends,

     Supporters of Michigan State University with the Grand Rapids Cycling community combined to create the MSU Gran Fondo with its inaugural event on June 29, 2013. It is an annual one day cycling event for riders of all levels, distances 20-80 miles next occurring June 23, 2018. Fundraising for the Gran Fondo have gone to support skin cancer research at our medical school. Having rediscovered cycling in 2012 and losing a friend to melanoma, I have been participating in the Gran Fondo since its inception. The community of Grand Rapids has embraced our Medical School and created an event worthy of our attention and involvment. Up until now, MSU medical school alumni seem significantly under represented. I would like to see that change, and will sponsor your participation in this years Gran Fondo.

     Every time I rode, I hoped that nexy year my son Jonathan would be riding with me in next years event. At age 28, on March 26, 2016 he died suddenly, extinguising that possibility. I believe our Gran Fondo provides an opportunity for parents with their adult children to reinforce their importance to each other. In his memory, I want to encourage others to achieve my goal, and hope to sponsor a parent or child on every team.
